How to keep rats out of your garbage to prevent the spread of disease

Rat find it fun to party around and inside your trash. It is a form of hobby to them. Often time it is so annoying to wake up in the morning seeing your trash messed up by rat.
However, to keep these pests out of your house, you need to deprive them of what they want most: food and shelter. Here are well researched  tips to keep rats away from your house.
Securely Seal The Lids
This one may seem obvious, but doing this correctly is not as straightforward as it sounds. Using bungee cords is the most common method, but it usually fails because the animal can either bite though the cord, work its way around it, or actually find a way to undo it. A better way is to use a locking lid trash can, or if you have a regular lid with handles, tie a rope to each handle and secure the ropes to the ground with stakes. No animal is smart enough to figure out that it needs to remove the stakes from the ground to get the lid off, and after a few vein attempts to remove the lid they will abort their mission and move on to greener - or less secured - pastures.
Use A Metal Trash Can
Metal not only keeps odours INSIDE the can but it's also impossible for large rodents to chew through it (small rodents such as rats have been known to chew through metal). Compare this to rubber, which lets scents escape and provides animals with a tempting chew toy. You can bungee a rubber trash can all you want but if the animal can chew through the side or the lid, it's not going to help you. Keep in mind there are various types of metal cans: steel cans provide extra strength and durability. Galvanized cans are rust proof and lighter/easier to transport. Either way, make sure the can comes with handles so you can lift it.
Spread or Spray Ammonia on Your Garbage Bag to Repel Rats with Ease
Animals are as averse to the smell of ammonia as we are, and they're not going to go near, let alone touch, anything that smells like it. It's important to spray not just the bags but also the garbage can itself to give you a two-ply attack. The great thing is the scent of ammonia lasts about a week, so this is not a labor-heavy endeavor. But if it rains, remember that you will have to reapply it. Other chemical-heavy scents that will deter animals include nail-polish remover and Windex.
Pick Up Fallen Fruits
If you have fruit or nut trees, clean up any fruit that falls on the ground.
Clean up your garage: Lawn seed, tulip bulbs and bone meal are food sources for mice and rats. Store them in metal or glass containers with tight lids. Don’t store firewood in your garage because it is a potential nesting site. Organise and store boxes off the ground to eliminate places for mice or rats to burrow.
Install Motion Detecting Light Around Your Trash Cans
A light coming on is going to scare away even the most intrepid and fearless visitors. There are a number of inexpensive motion-sensing/light systems available on the market today. Install one near your trash area so that anything that steps within 10 feet triggers a light.
Use Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil can be used to prevent rats as they can’t stand its pungent smell. All you have to do is dip some cotton balls in the oil and place them in the rat-prone area. It will surely give satisfactory results. Alternatively, citronella and castor oil can also be used.
Make Use of Rat Poison on Your Garbage Bag to Keep Rats Out Of Your Garbage
This particular rat control on your garbage is not really effective as other rats can easily come back when you have killed the first set. But, it can still help to permanently eliminate them from coming to scatter your garbage bag for any reason. However, before going ahead to make use of poison to keep rat away from your garbage you must consider the legislation in your region about rat.
Find a Secluded Or Closed Off Spot For Your Trash
This may require a tad of innovation, space-clearing, or craftsmanship, but one of the surest ways to keep animals from your trash is to make sure they can't even get to it in the first place. A simple wooden enclosure is enough, or if you have a back/entrance hallway, you can use that. The point is to make it out of reach for the would-be animal intruder.
Use Owl's feathers
Owl’s feather will scare the rats and force them to run away. Try placing some owl’s
feather inside the holes of these intruders. Alternatively, if you can’t find one, keep some plastic snakes in your garden to get rid of rats in the yard.
Pepper
The pungent smell of pepper makes it hard for the rats to breathe and threaten their survival. Simply sprinkle some crushed pepper around the corners and the holes where they reside. You will notice positive results. Repeat the process if necessary. Onion also works. Just slice an onion and keep it inside or near their holes.
Human Hair
This may sound weird, but rats can’t bear the sight of the human hair. Clip a few strands of your hair and throw them into the holes or places the ‘unwanted guests’ tend to visit the most. As the rats eat the hair, they will die.
Sound
Sound not only hurts them, but also makes their ears bleed. A sharp noise-making sound box is all you need to make them run away.
Keep the Surrounding of Your Garbage Clean To Keep Rat Away
It is true that rats are known as aggressive small pest, they do only like to move on a place with enough protective cover. For that reason, you can easily keep rat from visiting your garbage just by clearing the dirt around your garbage and expose every area.
